Interview with European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA)
Ahead of this year's Sustainability in Tires 2024, we spoke with Dr. Adam McCarthy,Secretary General at European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers Association (ETRMA), to get a sneak peek of what we can expect from his presentation on 'Regulation (Euro 7): It’s time to think about tire abrasion' Here's what he had to say…
Q1. Your topic will be “Regulation (Euro 7): It’s time to think about tire abrasion”, can you give us a snapshot of what delegates will hear? And why it is important for others in the industry to hear this message?
Euro 7 will regulate tyre abrasion for all tyres being placed in the European market. Whilst these limits have yet to be set, the presentation will speak to the process and timelines. As Euro 7 will apply to all tyre placed on the market, it will important for the industry in China to understand and get ready for the regulation.
Q2. In the sustainable context, what do you think are the key challenges facing the tire industry?
In addition to seeking to reduce the carbon and wider environmental footprint of tyre production, the tyre itself is now subject to increasing amounts of environmental rules and regulations. These include some of the regulated performances, EUDR and the Eco-Design Regulation which will likely require increased use of recycled content.
Q3. What are you most looking forward to at Sustainability in Tires 2024?
I am looking forward to being able to share the latest European regulatory developments with the industry in China, highlight the work of ETRMA, and meet with the participants. The Chinese tyre industry is an important partner for Europe and I look forward to building a closer relationship.
